For training purposes the cutaway uses manually controlled air pressure to apply and release the clutches and bands. The cutaway trainer demonstrates the internal operation of a automatic transaxle and permits the student to visualize and safely operate the system. This allows the cutaway transaxle to be easily shifted through all speeds.

The consists of an inlet manifold that supplies water to four jets, which are equally spaced around the turbine runner. The unit incorporates a pressure sensor to measure the inlet condition of the water. This pressure can be accurately controlled using the software supplied with the service unit. The runner itself is mounted on a horizontal shaft with a clear acrylic splash guard to enable maximum visibility of the workings. Each of the jets can be individually controlled using ball valves.

The trainer is equipped with a braking handle that simulates the brake pedal for educational purposes. The Cutaway Active Brake Booster And Master Cylinder allows to visually demonstrate the operation and internal parts of a vacuum brake booster and master cylinder. On a vehicle when the driver depresses the brake pedal, the movement is transformed into hydraulic pressure that is delivered to hydraulic cylinders at the four wheels through pipes and hoses using an incompressible fluid.

This allows the cutaway transmission to be correctly shifted through all speeds. For training purposes the teaching aid uses an electronic speed selector with lamps to show the applied and released clutches and bands.
