MMAW (Manual Metal Arc Welder) also called shielded metal arc welder i.e. SMAW is a process that uses a flux covered metal electrode to carry an electrical current and arc across the gap between the tip of the electrodes and the work. The electric arc creates sufficient heat to melt both the electrodes and the work.
Metals from the electrode travels across the arc to the molten pool of metal are surrounded, purified and protected by gaseous cloud and a covering of slag produced as the flux coating of the electrodes burns or vaporize. As the arc moves away, the mixtures of the molten electrode and the base metal solidfies and become one piece.
